Biography

Lucile West Martin Smith, a resident of Montgomery, died January 13, 2010. She was the widow of Maury Drane Smith and the daughter of Arthur Columbus Martin and Lucile West Martin of Clayton, Alabama, each of whom predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Martha Martin Smith Vandervoort (Dr. Kenneth Luckie Vandervoort) of Anniston, Alabama, daughter Sally Drane Smith Legg (William Anderson Legg, Jr.) of Birmingham, Alabama, son Dr. Maury Drane Smith, Jr. (Adele Turgeon) of Randolph, Vermont; a sister Martha Martin Houston of Montgomery and Orange Beach, Alabama; a sister Clara West Martin and brothers James Lafayette Martin, II and John West Martin of Eufaula. Seven grandchildren, Lucile Martin Vandervoort, Kenneth Luckie Vandervoort, Jr., William Maury Vandervoort of Anniston, Martha Martin Legg, Elizabeth Rose Legg of Birmingham, Cecile Martin Smith and Maury Drane Smith, III, of Randolph, Vermont.
Mrs. Smith attended Huntingdon College and was a graduate of the University of Alabama and a member of the Kappa Delta sorority. She was a Sustaining Member of the Montgomery Junior League, a member of the Colonial Dames of America, a member of the Antiquarian Society, a former member of the Board of the Montgomery Symphony, The Montgomery Academy and Booker T. Washington Magnet School. She was a loyal member of the First United Methodist Church, Montgomery and a founder and member of the Board of The Samaritan Counseling Center.
